Chapter XXX:

No time to spare

Admiring her naked self in the mirror after drying off from an exhilarating and refreshing shower, Nicole beamed over her new-old hair color as she stroked through it with a brush. Having been going with a glowing blonde over the past five years, she had begun going through removing the dye and bringing back her natural brown look that also included organic radiant orange hues and highlights, especially when in the sun.

Jester monitored from the doorway and chirped with high-pitched tones while she slipped into a silky black robe and finished combing her hair. “You know, Jest, mama would like some privacy, but I guess you are a cat and don’t understand what that means.” Rolling her eyes and smirking, she flipped off the light and sauntered into the kitchen to make a mug of cocoa.

What am I going to say to him when they get here? Until the spell is broken, I can’t talk to him like I would before, as my little adopted bro and partner in crime, and I don’t want to act like who I was while we were together. As fun as that was, and spicy…

I can’t be that person anymore. All I was doing was trying my best to replicate what he lost, but I miss the real relationship me and he had, long before the goddamned curse. He’s my best friend.

Hopping on the countertop and interrupting her daze, Jester meowed and rubbed his head against her arm. Joyous and scratching behind the cat’s ears, Nicole continued to ponder.

Hopefully, she’ll find a breakthrough tonight, and this whole nightmare can reach its conclusion. And then the three of us can be a family again.

She lifted Jester and brought him into the living area and on the loveseat with her. While he curled in her lap, memories from Nova Albion danced in her head.

Every seed I needed to plant was successfully bore into him. As much as it sucks that we have to go back to dynamics centered around me being the third wheel to both, I am confident that he will want to be with me as who we are after she's lived her life. Finally, the Man of the Sun will give me what I’ve long desired. What I should have been given centuries ago…

Vibration from the coffee table startled her, and she glanced down to see her phone light up. Noticing it was her accomplice, she answered and hoped nothing ominous happened. “Hey, Mia, what’s up? You at the rendezvous point yet?”

“Yeah, but I’m still in the aerial, sitting in the parking lot with the shield up so nobody sees me. There was a group of skinheads here and they suddenly took off in a Suburban, and one of them got in a big rig. I know it’s typical to have a worrying feeling around supremacists, but I have an intuition that they are about to do something treasonous, more so than usual.”

Nicole popped her neck and rolled her eyes as she listened.
